A customer needed a 3D model of a small, intricate gaming piece for recreation.
DCD 3D scanned the physical part and digitized the complex geometry into a manufacturable model.
The customer received a detailed model of the part and was able to bring new life back to a vintage toy with a near identical replica of the missing piece.
The Project
This was one of Davis Custom Design’s earliest projects, and it is an excellent example of our 3D scanning capabilities. A customer needed a digital model of a small component for a rare, vintage toy to recreate the part using his own equipment. The part was a complex surface featuring irregular geometry, organic contours, and sculpted details. Accurately recreating this part would have been nearly impossible to do manually or from hand measurements alone, and that is where DCD came into play.
Capturing the Geometry
Using high-resolution 3D scanning, DCD successfully captured the existing geometry and processed the scan data to not only deliver a visual reference, but a clean, manufacturable 3D model that the customer used for part recreation and repair - helping restore the toy to its former glory.
Our Capabilities
This project features many of the same workflows DCD provides to other technical projects: discuss the customer’s needs, scan the physical part to capture critical geometry, process the data, and deliver an accurate 3D model for manufacturing.
This type of small-scale geometry capture is particularly useful when a part is too complex, damaged, organic, or otherwise irregular to recreate efficiently using traditional methods, and it demonstrates how DCD is proudly capable of using 3D scanning to bridge the gap between existing physical parts, a useable digital model, and real replacement parts.
